마을에 안개가 자욱하게 깔린 새벽, 고양이 피코가 사라졌다.
On a foggy morning in the village, the cat named Pico vanished without a trace.
피코는 매일 아침 같은 시간에 우유배달하는 집 마당에 앉아 있던 고양이였다.
Pico was known to sit in the same front yard every morning, watching the milk delivery.
하지만 그날은 아무리 기다려도 그의 모습은 보이지 않았다.
But that day, no matter how long they waited, he never showed up.
레온은 피코가 마지막으로 목격된 골목으로 향했다.
Leon headed to the alley where Pico was last seen.
그곳엔 바닥에 흐릿하게 남은 발자국과 긁힌 상자가 있었다.
There, he found faint paw prints and a scratched wooden box.
“자발적으로 사라진 게 아니야.” 레온의 눈이 날카로워졌다.
“He didn’t leave on his own,” Leon muttered, his eyes narrowing.
레온은 주변을 돌며 단서를 찾기 시작했다.
Leon began circling the area, searching for more clues.
전봇대 밑에서 그는 낯선 고양이의 털 한 가닥을 발견했다.
Under the telephone pole, he found a single strand of unfamiliar fur.
“타지 고양이가 이 마을에?”
“A stranger cat in our village?”
그는 그 털의 냄새를 따라 폐창고 쪽으로 발걸음을 옮겼다.
He followed the scent of the fur toward the old abandoned warehouse.
폐창고 문은 살짝 열려 있었고, 안쪽은 깊은 어둠이 드리워 있었다.
The warehouse door was slightly ajar, and inside was cloaked in shadow.
레온은 조심스럽게 안으로 들어갔다.
Leon stepped inside cautiously.
그리고 그곳에서 예상치 못한 고양이 무리를 만났다.
And there, he encountered a group of unexpected cats.
그들은 도시에서 온 고양이들로, 잠시 은신 중이었다.
They were city cats, hiding temporarily in the village.
그 무리 중 한 마리가 피코를 가리켰다.
One of them pointed toward a corner—there was Pico.
“난… 그저 새로운 친구들이 궁금했을 뿐이야.” 피코가 말했다.
“I was just curious about the new cats,” Pico said with a shrug.
모두가 걱정하고 있었던 사실을 전하자, 피코는 미안한 표정을 지었다.
When told how worried everyone had been, Pico looked genuinely sorry.
레온은 피코를 데리고 마을로 돌아왔다.
Leon brought Pico back to the village.
“때로는 가장 단순한 실종이 가장 복잡한 실마리를 품고 있지.”
“Sometimes, the simplest disappearances hold the most complex clues.”
레온은 그렇게 말하며 어둠을 뒤로하고 천천히 걸었다.
Leon said, walking slowly as the fog began to lift behind him.
